History and the
Vietnam War
War dogs have saved countless
American and allied lives, but their contributions are only now becoming
visible. Still, following the Vietnam War
not one of these heroes was returned to
live as a peaceful companion dog in the United States. Instead, they were classified as
equipment. Most were euthanized under orders from our government.
These war dog heroes remained
ever
loyal, ever trusting, and powerfully effective in saving American
lives. In return for their extraordinary service they were
abandoned. Personally, handlers would have undertaken any
sacrifice to see them safely home. However, these soldiers
under orders were not permitted to do so.
We can never fully repair
this tragic injustice. However, all
of us can now work together to build a lasting memorial to the contributions
of these courageous dogs and to the brave handlers at the other end of
the leash.
