War Dogs at K9HERO.COM

We urge you to support United States K9 teams currently deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq, and throughout the world.  These remarkable working dogs and their handlers keep soldiers and facilities safe where no other tool or training can.

It is no understatement: Lives and limbs are saved by the work of these dogs.

We urge you to assist our deployed K-9s and handlers by offering support to the Space Coast War Dog Association at:

History and the Vietnam War

War dogs have saved countless American and allied lives, but their contributions are only now becoming visible.   Still, following the Vietnam War not one of these heroes was returned to live as a peaceful companion dog in the United States.  Instead, they were classified as equipment.  Most were euthanized under orders from our government.

These war dog heroes remained ever loyal, ever trusting, and powerfully effective in saving American lives.  In return for their extraordinary service they were abandoned.   Personally, handlers would have undertaken any sacrifice to see them safely home.   However, these soldiers under orders were not permitted to do so.

We can never fully repair this tragic injustice.  However, all of us can now work together to build a lasting memorial to the contributions of these courageous dogs and to the brave handlers at the other end of the leash.

This is the National War Dog Memorial

Please, consider the freedom you now enjoy, and contribute to the  National War Dog Memorial by following the link below:

A United States War Dog from WWII

Meet Private First Class - "Chips"

We recently obtained an original AP photograph of a famous WWII War Dog named "Chips."  Chips has been the subject of movies and books.  This remarkable War Dog, who dispatched a German machine gun nest, is shown here meeting then General Eisenhower.  "Chips" was one of the first German Shepherd Dogs used by the United States.  Also note that PFC Chips outranks his handler!   Please click on the thumbnail for a larger view.

War Dog Exception at K9HERO.COM

War dog heroes posted on this site are limited to those K9's which have either served directly with the United States Military or an allied country relative to a specific conflict.  While we respect K9's worldwide, we owe our freedom, and thus this website, to the sacrifices of the service men, women, and K9's of the United States military.

We support special recognition for all United States Combat Veteran Dog Handlers, the very few K9 heroes who returned home, and the majority who never did.  May not a single dog or handler ever be forgotten.
